Greenaway, Peter

Regista cinematografico inglese (n. Newport, Hampshire, 1942). Dopo essere stato pittore e montatore, si è dedicato alla regia, rivelando un non comune talento figurativo, che si traduce talvolta in un esasperato rigore formale. Tra i suoi film, caratterizzati dall'originalità e dall'ambiguità dell'impianto narrativo: The draughtsman's contract (I misteri del giardino di Compton House, 1982); A zed and two noughts (Lo zoo di Venere, 1985); The belly of an architect (1987); Drowning by numbers (Giochi sull'acqua, 1988); The cook, the thief, his wife and her lover (1989); Prospero's books (L'ultima tempesta, 1991). Lo spiccato gusto figurativo, i temi della nascita, del sesso e della morte, che hanno spesso caratterizzato il suo cinema, sono stati nuovamente ripresi ed elaborati in The baby of Mâcon (1993); The pillow book (1996) e 8¹/₂ women (1999). Nel 2003 e il 2004 ha girato le tre parti che costituiscono The Tulse Luper Suitcases (The Moab story, 2003; From sark to the finish, 2003; Vaux to the Sea, 2003). Più recentemente ha diretto: A life in suitcases (2005);Nightwatching (2007), sulla genesi del celebre quadro del pittore olandese Rembrandt La ronda di notte; il documentario The marriage (2009); Goltzius and the Pelican Company (2012); Eisenstein in Guanajuato (2014).
