Storico tedesco naturalizzato statunitense (Baden-Baden 1905- Princeton, N.J., 1991). Emigrato negli USA (1936), dal 1962 al 1975 professore di storia all’Institute for advanced study di Princeton e dal 1975 al 1976 allo Smith college di Northampton.
